NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A tragic shooting occurred at Antioch High School on
Wednesday morning, leaving a 16-year-old student fatally wounded and a 17-
year-old shooter dead. The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) has
confirmed the identities of the victim and the perpetrator, and investigations are
underway to uncover the motive behind the incident.
Details of the Incident
On January 24, 2025, Antioch High School witnessed a horrific event in its cafeteria.
The victim, Josselin Corea Escalante, 16, was fatally shot by a fellow student,
Solomon Henderson, 17, who later turned the gun on himself. Another 17-year-old
male student was grazed by a bullet but has since been treated and released from
a local hospital.
Emergency services received calls at approximately 11:11 a.m., initiating a rapid law
enforcement response. Officers discovered Henderson deceased upon arrival,
while Escalante succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The MNPD continues to
investigate, with Chief John Drake confirming the motive remains unclear.
Community Leaders Respond
Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell and Police Chief Drake addressed the
community in a press conference, emphasizing the tragedy's impact on students,
families, and staff. A recovery center has been established to provide resources to
those affected.
“This is a devastating day for our community. We must come together to support
one another and work toward preventing future tragedies,” Mayor O’Connell stated.
Antioch High School Closure and Safety Measures
In the wake of the incident, Antioch High School will remain closed through Friday,
allowing students and staff time to process and heal. Metro Nashville Public
Schools (MNPS) officials are working closely with law enforcement and counselors
to ensure a safe and supportive environment upon reopening.
Enhanced safety protocols, including increased security presence and mental
health support, will be implemented. Parents are encouraged to speak with their
children about the event and seek professional assistance if needed.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have disclosed that online material related to the shooter is under
review. The MNPD is working diligently to piece together the events leading up to
the tragedy and to identify any warning signs that may have been missed.
Chief Drake highlighted the complexity of school shootings, noting that the
investigation will extend into the coming days. “Our focus remains on providing
clarity to the families and community while preventing similar incidents in the
future,” Drake said.
National Context and Gun Violence in Schools
This incident adds to a growing list of school shootings nationwide, underscoring
the urgent need to address gun violence in educational settings. According to
the K-12 School Shooting Database, over 300 school shootings were recorded in
the U.S. last year, highlighting the scale of this crisis.
Advocates and policymakers are calling for stricter gun control measures,
enhanced school security, and increased mental health resources to address the
root causes of such tragedies.
