The universe has explained why he is stepping back from acting. In an interview
with
Variety, Evans said that he is looking to take on more challenging and diverse
roles and that he is also interested in directing and producing.
"I'm not trying to fit into that box of a leading man," Evans said. "I prefer to take on
ensemble and supporting roles. I think it's more interesting. Someone like Robert
Downey Jr. walks in the room and he owns the oxygen. I don't have that personality.
I'm more comfortable in an ensemble setting."
Evans also said that he is tired of playing the same types of roles. "I've done a lot of
action films," he said. "I'm not saying I won't do them again, but I'm looking for
something different. I want to do something that challenges me."
Evans' decision to step back from acting comes after a decade of playing Captain
America. The role made him one of the most popular and recognizable actors in
the world, but it also typecast him somewhat.
"I'm grateful for the opportunities that Captain America has given me," Evans said.
"But I'm also ready to move on. I want to do other things."
Evans' next film is Lightyear, a Pixar animated film about the astronaut who
inspired Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story films. Evans is also set to direct and
star in the film Red One, a Christmas action comedy film for Amazon Prime Video.
It is unclear how long Evans will be stepping back from acting, but he has said that
he is still passionate about the craft. "I love acting," he said. "But I also need to be
challenged. I need to be doing something that makes me feel excited."
